Introduce yourself with five albums that have shaped you.
AC/DC - For Those About to Rock, We Salute You
I bought this on cassette when I was like 10 years old. I mean they fired a cannon in salute of us all who were about to rock, after all.
Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking
My intro to “weird” “arty” rock. I was listening to the pillars of metal back then: Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Anthrax. A friend let me listen to the Mountain Song and I was hooked. To say this one record changed my life is an understatement. It opened my eyes (and ears) to so much more than I was experiencing.
Medeski, Martin & Wood - Friday Afternoon in the Universe.
I read an article about this band who was in town that night. I hadn’t heard of them before. On a whim I went to the show. No one else could make it so I went solo. I was less than 10 feet from the band! The Sapphire Supper Club in Orlando Florida was an amazing venue back in the day. The way these three guys played and communicated with each other really opened my eyes to how musicians collaborate, especially in the improvisational spaces of music making.
Tool - Lateralus
I dont love every song Tool has made. But the ones I like I really like. Lateralus specifically might be my favorite song of theirs and in my top 5 ever. Following our will and wind, we may just go where no ones been is a hell of a lyric, especially in the context of this song. And it’ll be my next tattoo. Hence the addition to the list of albums that have shaped me.
BadBadNotGood - III
These folks worked with Ghostface Killah on the album Sour Soul. I believe they released III as their first album. It’s the instrumental version of the work they did with Ghostface Killa. I love the heavy repetition on Hedron in particular.
It was hard to pick just 5. If I answered this question tomorrow, the albums may be totally different :D
